The case of Guadalupe Villalobos, known as Lupita TikTok, has captured attention on social media after her daughter was admitted to a hospital due to a medical emergency. The news was revealed by Mariana Rodríguez, president of the DIF Capullos and wife of the governor of Nuevo León, Samuel García, who informed that the baby was hospitalized for severe dehydration.
According to the child's father, the minor suffered seizures and is currently in critical condition with a risk of brain death and multiple organ failures. The severity of her condition has generated outrage on social media. However, recently there has been discontent regarding how this case is being focused on by the media.
On platforms like TikTok, users have compared the dissemination of Lupita's case with the lack of attention to the chemical spill that occurred at the Ternium plant in San Nicolás de los Garza, Nuevo León. The environmental incident happened on April 17 when a substance from the Churubusco plant reached the La Talaverna stream, leaving a reddish stain that spread over more than eleven kilometers. The spilled substance was identified as ferrous chloride, which can cause irritation to the eyes, throat, and respiratory tract.
Despite the cleaning efforts announced by Ternium, journalistic reports have revealed that traces of the chemical are still detected in certain areas of the stream. Additionally, scientists have begun investigating the deaths of wildlife in the affected region, labeling the incident as a possible ecocide, which has raised concerns on social media.
Citizens have accused the government of downplaying the environmental impact and have expressed that Lupita TikTok's case could be used as a "smoke screen" to divert attention from the ecological disaster caused by Ternium. There has been a growing social unrest as people feel that the massive dissemination of the influencer's personal tragedy is being prioritized to overshadow the ecological tragedy.
